“I am standing in a room I made. This room holds all of you. Within this space is a portrait of each one of you. I cannot disconnect you from the places you have been–we have been. In an effort to preserve the memory of you I have set out to create a space where we can be together.”
– Margaret Walker

Painting is both noun and a verb, a silent form of communication with the power to propose alternatives to the destructive currents of public discourse.
These works in this exhibition are visual barometers, registering what could be described as evolutionary entropy — where layers of pattern speak not only to the effects of global warming but to the human body and the hope of recovery and renewal.
My mark-making is an imperfect effort to capture moments in time: water slipping through our fingers, life lessons learned from mistakes. The past is processed while symbolizing efforts to dispel despair. Each painting session holds the present moment, offering a literal way to begin anew. Each pattern, some made with fabrics found at Goodwill, combines what was and what could be, knitting both together to show us a way forward.
From the body’s lived experience, idiosyncratic streaks hint at speed: of streaming and doomscrolling; the tudum that accompanies the N of the Netflix logo breaking apart; screens frozen yet generated without algorithmic assistance. Acrylic paint on canvas (sometimes made from recycled single-use bottles) creates endless cycles of making and reusing; a storm of strokes that deluge digital dispassion, offering an action akin to watering flowers.
Each painting here is a chance to dream, speaking soundlessly of human intelligence in awe of a section of the sky.
