OPENING RECEPTION | Glimpses of the Sky and Other Scapes: An Exhibition in Memory of Jacob

    4:00pm - 7:00pm

    Flyer for Jacob's Show
    Description

Join us for the Opening Reception of Glimpses of the Sky and Other Scapes: An Exhibition in Memory of Jacob by artist Ann Schlesinger.

Ann teaches painting and drawing with an emphasis on composition, perceptual observation, color and surface.  Her philosophy is simple – the visual arts should be visually compelling, pulling you in and making you see!  Ann has a BA in Studio Art and Art History from the University of Virginia, an MFA in Painting from American University, and had a year of postgraduate study at the Fine Arts Academy in Munich, Germany.  Awards include a Fulbright Scholarship in Painting, the Annette Kade Fine Arts Fellowship, the David Lloyd Kreeger Award, and the Art Prize from UVA.  Ann is an Adjunct Professor of Art at Georgetown University, and has taught extensively at area schools including the Yellow Barn Studio, AU, Maryland, NVCC and the Smithsonian.

    Invitation from the artist:

Please join me and my family for Glimpses of the Sky and Other Scapes, an art exhibition in honor of my son Jacob.

The show’s opening will be Saturday, October 26, from 4 – 7 pm at the Yellow Barn Gallery of Glen Echo.
This will be the fourth exhibition in honor of my son, Jacob, who passed away in October 2020. Each year since his passing, our family has had an art show in his memory at the Yellow Barn Gallery.

Stop by for some great music, refreshments, and to see my most recent pieces.

This show will consist of paintings, drawings, photos and other tributes, and it will be a celebration of life through art – an opportunity to remember Jacob and keep his spirit alive. Proceeds from sales will be donated to the Jacob Schlesinger Lustig Fund for the Homeless, created in his honor. As many of you know, Jacob cared deeply about the homeless, and spent time with homeless communities across the country and abroad. Since its creation, this fund has contributed to eight local charities.

I hope to see you there:) If you cannot come, please consider a donation to this cause. You can read more about Jacob and the fund here.

ACO ARTIST DISCUSSION WITH JOYCE ZIPPERER

    Description

Join us Saturday morning for a virtual Artist Discussion with Joyce Zipperer, part of The Art Clinic Online's artist discussion series.

    Artist Statement

My work stems from lifelong interest in the design and construction of costumes and clothing, which ultimately led to sculpture. Now as a metal sculptor, my concerns address issues of women’s undergarments and shoes. Using “inflexible” materials of copper, aluminum, steel and stone emphasizes the absurdity and torture women have endured for fashion. In past history, women have squeezed themselves into corsets, reshaping bones and internal organs. We continue to cram our feet into ill-fitting shoes, in order to be currently “in style.” With fantasy and a bit of humor, my work confronts viewers about conflicts among the competing values of beauty, comfort and health.

ACO ARTIST DISCUSSION WITH DAWN WHITMORE

    -

    10:30am - 11:30 am

    Artwork by Dawn Whitmore
    Description

Join us Saturday morning for a virtual Artist Discussion with Dawn Whitmore, part of The Art Clinic Online's artist discussion series.

Dawn Whitmore (b. 1983) is a Washington, DC based interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the dynamics between mythology, identity and the environment. Using soundscapes, photography, video, sculpture, performance, painting, and drawing, she creates immersive spaces that invite the participant to enter an altered emotional landscape. Dawn received a BFA from the Corcoran School of Art in 2005. Her work has been shown nationally including: the Mesa Museum of Contemporary Art (AZ), Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington (VA), Hemphill Fine Arts (DC), Area 405 (MD), Spring Gallery (NY) and published in The Guardian, The Washington Post and The Virginia Quarterly Review. She is a recipient of multiple Artist Fellowship Grants from the DC Commission on the Arts and an CAH-NEA CARES Act Grant.

    Artist Statement
The act of drawing represents the physical gesture of making a mark on a surface; an ancient and sacred ritual that goes back to the beginning of human consciousness. It also can mean to ‘draw’ something out – to invoke a new action or perception. In my work I am exploring the act of drawing by creating immersive environments through sculpture, sound, performance, video and traditional mark making to understand the layers of individual and collective mythology. The root of my work is based on exploring the inner emotional landscape – a place represented with symbolic imagery derived from nature and myth. I am curious to explore the connections between storytelling and reality. As a child I was enthralled by the colorful serpentine path on the board game Candyland. This inspired playfulness is a thread in my work that leads to exploring themes of deep ecology and climate change.

ACO ARTIST DISCUSSION WITH SONDRA N. ARKIN

    10:30am

An image of artist Sondra N. Arkin
    Description

Join us Saturday morning for a virtual Artist Discussion with Sondra N. Arkin, part of The Art Clinic Online's artist discussion series. As a sculptor, printmaker, and painter, Sondra N. Arkin is known for her exploration of line, space, and boundaries. Modular installations use common materials such as wax, ink, shellac, steel, foraged natural, found, and manufactured materials. In her paintings, luminous surfaces are saturated with color and atmosphere. Prints and drawings further explore the intersection of atmospheric and linear formations. Ethereal orbs of steel wire form “drawings in space” that amplify the dialogue between the viewer and object, and installations of found objects further explore the idea of environment.

Arkin has participated in many exhibitions in both galleries and museums, and her work has been represented in a number of private, corporate, and public collections including the U.S. State Department’s Art In Embassies Program, the DC Art Bank, and public art in Crystal City, Virginia. She has been awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities multiple times.

In addition, as Curator of the DC City Hall Art Collection, she assembled for the District a remarkable collection that includes many of the finest artists who have lived in the nation’s capital. As the largest permanent collection of regional art on public display, it constitutes a unique resource. She has curated many independent projects, regularly programs alternative arts spaces, and is deeply involved in the mid-Atlantic arts community. She lives and works in Washington, DC.
