Stitch by Stitch: Life Pieces to Masterpieces

    10:00am - 6:00pm

Orange background with two hot air balloons in red and royal blue with mountains below with Black History Month badge
    Description

This artwork, a collection of colorful collages of acrylic-painted canvas scraps, was created by Black and Brown boys and from Washington DC’s Wards 7 and 8 – specifically, program participants of the DC-based youth arts program Life Pieces To Masterpieces (LPTM). The stories told in each piece celebrate the power, joy, and resilience of the boys and men served by LPTM as they both persevere through their life challenges and celebrate their life triumphs.

As Apprentices create paintings in LPTM’s unique style, their artwork becomes a repository exemplifying a wide range of representations of Black American males from the unique and diverse perspectives of children and young adults. As they follow the signature process of cutting and sewing scraps of canvas into a masterpiece to collectively celebrate, they are transforming their “life pieces” into “masterpieces.”
