Dawn Whitmore (b. 1983) is a Washington, DC based interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the dynamics between mythology, identity and the environment. Using soundscapes, photography, video, sculpture, performance, painting, and drawing, she creates immersive spaces that invite the participant to enter an altered emotional landscape. Dawn received a BFA from the Corcoran School of Art in 2005. Her work has been shown nationally including: the Mesa Museum of Contemporary Art (AZ), Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington (VA), Hemphill Fine Arts (DC), Area 405 (MD), Spring Gallery (NY) and published in The Guardian, The Washington Post and The Virginia Quarterly Review. She is a recipient of multiple Artist Fellowship Grants from the DC Commission on the Arts and an CAH-NEA CARES Act Grant.

Artist Statement
The act of drawing represents the physical gesture of making a mark on a surface; an ancient and sacred ritual that goes back to the beginning of human consciousness. It also can mean to ‘draw’ something out – to invoke a new action or perception. In my work I am exploring the act of drawing by creating immersive environments through sculpture, sound, performance, video and traditional mark making to understand the layers of individual and collective mythology. The root of my work is based on exploring the inner emotional landscape – a place represented with symbolic imagery derived from nature and myth. I am curious to explore the connections between storytelling and reality. As a child I was enthralled by the colorful serpentine path on the board game Candyland. This inspired playfulness is a thread in my work that leads to exploring themes of deep ecology and climate change.

Join us Saturday morning for a virtual Artist Discussion with Sondra N. Arkin, part of The Art Clinic Online's artist discussion series. As a sculptor, printmaker, and painter, Sondra N. Arkin is known for her exploration of line, space, and boundaries. Modular installations use common materials such as wax, ink, shellac, steel, foraged natural, found, and manufactured materials. In her paintings, luminous surfaces are saturated with color and atmosphere. Prints and drawings further explore the intersection of atmospheric and linear formations. Ethereal orbs of steel wire form “drawings in space” that amplify the dialogue between the viewer and object, and installations of found objects further explore the idea of environment.

Arkin has participated in many exhibitions in both galleries and museums, and her work has been represented in a number of private, corporate, and public collections including the U.S. State Department’s Art In Embassies Program, the DC Art Bank, and public art in Crystal City, Virginia. She has been awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities multiple times.

In addition, as Curator of the DC City Hall Art Collection, she assembled for the District a remarkable collection that includes many of the finest artists who have lived in the nation’s capital. As the largest permanent collection of regional art on public display, it constitutes a unique resource. She has curated many independent projects, regularly programs alternative arts spaces, and is deeply involved in the mid-Atlantic arts community. She lives and works in Washington, DC.

The Park View Gallery presents FLORA— A Celebration of Nature, Beauty & Life, a solo exhibition by artist Marcie Wolf-Hubbard. This exhibition features a collection of paintings and sculpture in encaustic and mixed media and is dedicated to the artist’s late Aunt Flora. Wolf-Hubbard states, “My Aunt Flora was a huge supporter of me, my family, and my art. She displayed my art proudly in her beautiful home, was my patron, and attended many of my art receptions.…The exhibit is a celebration. Aunt Flora touched so many people’s lives.”

The Stone Tower Gallery presents A Momentary Immersion, a solo exhibition of drawings by artist Susan Stacks. These drawings are records of a moment of processing. They are fields to review potential problems, identify hierarchy and community among subjective features, and opportunity for convergent problem-solving.

The Popcorn Gallery presents Drifting with Nature, a two-person exhibition by artists Jan Rowland and Danielle Bensky. In this exhibition, viewers will experience how profoundly the artists have been inspired by nature over the course of many years of making art.

Join us for the Opening Reception of The Pastel Works by Ephraim Rubenstein in Stone Tower Studio. Ephraim Rubenstein’s pastel works capture the fleeting moments where light and form converge to reveal deeper truths about his surroundings. Utilizing pastel’s immediacy and intimacy, he engages directly with the essence of his subjects. The tactile medium allows him to layer colors and textures, building surfaces that echo the complexities of the natural world.
