Glen Echo Pottery was founded by Jeff Kirk, who has been the Artistic Director, full-time artist-in-residence, and chief instructor since 1974. He managed the Pottery as a sole proprietorship until 2003, when it was incorporated and restructured it as a non-profit organization. The Pottery became one of the initial members of the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture (GEPPAC).
