    Performances 6:00pm 7:30pm | 9:00pm

Uprooted Dance Hilma af Klint image
    Description

UpRooted Dance presents "Untethered & Unseen: The Mysterious Life of Hilma af Klint," at Glen Echo Park from May 2-4, 2024. In this experiential and participatory performance, audiences will be guided through tableau moments from Swedish Artist Hilma af Klint's (1862-1944) life as a spiritual medium and powerhouse female artist and founder of the abstract art movement. Her story, largely unknown and untold, is still unfolding today. Hilma af Klint was a pioneer – a female force in a male dominated modern art world, paving the way for many other abstract artists including Kandinsky, Malevich, and Mondrian.

Audiences will be immersed in dance and interdisciplinary storytelling with choreography by Keira Hart-Mendoza and dancers; original musical composition and performance by Robin Ghertner; and video by Nitsan Scharf and Chandler Bramstedt.

Unveiling Ceremony & Reception - Stephanie Garon: Uprooted

    4:00 pm

    Stephanie Garon painting
    Description

Join us for the unveiling of Uprooted. This event is outdoors and will take place in front of the installation, with a reception to follow. Light refreshments will be provided.

Uprooted, a sculptural installation by environmental artist Stephanie Garon, considers humanity's interruption of nature through the visual metaphors of lines. Comprised of steel and English ivy, an invasive plant species sourced at Glen Echo Park, the artwork references the historical, cultural, and scientific lines of the land. Dividing lines define edges: the people that claim access to the land, the invasive species crowding the native environment, and the geological location of Glen Echo Park on a plateau of Piscataway and Anacostan land. Uprooted suggests a degradation of the ecological balance over time.
