Meet Artist Leonard Jewler in the Stone Tower Gallery to learn more about his solo exhibition 1960s Washington: Turbulence and Community.
1960s Washington: Turbulence and Community showcases the work of photographer Leonard Jewler, capturing Washington D.C. during the late 1960s. This was a time of turbulence in the nation’s capital when there were frequent demonstrations in the streets. At the same time, residents went about their daily lives in the community. Fifteen photos are presented in three sets: the aftermath of the 1968 riots triggered by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; the 1969 demonstration against the inauguration of Richard Nixon; and scenes of neighborhood life in the city in 1969. The photos were taken with a single-lens reflex film camera, and the negatives were converted to digital format.
