The Glen Echo Park Partnership presents Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band in the historic Spanish Ballroom. This band is irresistably danceable and you'll have plenty of room to shake it on our beautiful hardwood dance floor (110 feet by 70 feet.) Dancing to live music runs from 9pm - midnight. Doors open at 8:30 pm.

Chopteeth is a 12-piece Afrofunk orchestra exploring the common groove between the funkiest, most hip-shakin’ West African and American popular music on the planet. The core of the Chopteeth sound is Afrobeat: a big-band funk invented by Fela Kuti in 1970’s Nigeria. Afrobeat is a spicy stew of modern jazz, Yoruba tribal music, and James Brown-inspired rhythms. Chopteeth’s sets feature original compositions along with updates of African dance classics.

"A storming powerhouse of big-band African funk, Chopteeth is smart, tight and relentlessly driving: a definite don't-miss."
—The Washington Post

The Spanish Ballroom, a beautifully restored 1933 Mediterranean style Art Deco building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, hosts nearly 200 dance events each year. It boasts a huge (110’ by 70’) hardwood dance floor that is beloved by dancers throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

All profits from this concert benefit the Glen Echo Park Partnership, which sponsors and hosts an extensive range of art classes, exhibitions, festivals, social dances, children’s theater, and music programs at Glen Echo Park in addition to preserving and maintaining the Park’s historic structures.
