The Journey: Photography by Katherine T. Andrle and Gayle Rothschild, is a record of their explorations, experiences, and observations. The work focuses on the dynamic landscapes of the C & O Canal, Potomac River, and Seneca Breaks. Today the C & O Canal is a beloved and treasured National Park just outside the nation’s capital. Rothschild’s vintage black and white silver gelatin prints and her archival ink jet prints reveal the peace and lushness of the canal and the river, as well as the aftermath of nature’s violence, destruction, and regeneration. Andrle’s color images taken at Seneca Breaks on the Potomac River during her many days of paddling there have an ethereal romantic quality, revealing quiet, private moments. Join us to experience local beauty through the lens of Rothschild and Andrle.

The thoughtful details and conceptual designs in their works are meditative, inviting viewers to experience the complexities of paper transformation. Each work evokes a deeper meaning; our interaction with paper has cross-cultural differences and significances. This show meets at the intersection of acknowledging this everyday material and the limitless ways in which paper can be manipulated, transformed, and reimagined.

Fran Abrams' work in Unpainted Colors is created from polymer clay and is designed to be hung on the wall like a bas relief. Polymer clay is a man-made substance that begins as blocks of solid-colored clay-like material. The clay colors blend just like blending paints. Like many polymer clay artists, Abrams uses a pasta machine to condition the clay, to blend colors, and to achieve complex designs. Her work is unusual because of what is not there. There is no paint. All of the colors come from the clay itself. The focus is not only on blending the various color clays, but also on manipulating the results to express the themes of the pieces. The works are framed and presented without glass, allowing the viewer to see the intricacies of the designs.

The Craig Gildner Big Band presents live music by Count Basie and Nat King Cole in the historic Spanish Ballroom! The Craig Gildner Big Band is a thirteen piece repertoire orchestra authentically recreating the sounds of the swing era made famous by Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Artie Shaw and others. Arrangements are direct transcriptions and stock selections that would have been played back in the day by bands across the country. Adding to the period feel, the rhythm section boasts calfskin drums arranged in a manner much like Krupa’s, gut wound bass strings, acoustic rhythm guitar on a vintage Gibson L7, and stride piano solos.

The musicianship is of the highest caliber. Bandleader Craig Gildner handpicked each and every section from DC’s pool of talented musicians. The band can whisper and scream… and everything in between…all in just one song!

Swing. Jump Blues. Vintage Lounge. Boogie Woogie. Formed in 2017, The Alpha Rhythm Kings have created quite a stir with music fans, having crafted an exciting California sound, with what Roots Music Magazine No Depression calls "the badge of authenticity." The band's top quality musicians, with Robert Dehlinger's blazing trumpet and "magnetic" singing (Jazz Corner) leading the way, are a favorite with swing dancers. Their debut recording, "California Boogie," featuring their exciting original arrangement of "Oh Marie," is a "truly happening party record" (Jazz Corner), and one of the "greatest swingin' releases worldwide" (Hey Mister Jesse).

The dance includes a beginner swing lesson with Tom & Debra from 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Band plays two sets 9:00 pm -11:45 pm; DJ music 11:45 pm - midnight. Beginners are welcome and no partner is necessary.
