The 49th Annual Labor Day Art Show at Glen Echo Park will be held in the historic Spanish Ballroom from Saturday, August 31 through Monday, September 2, 2019.

 

There will be a Public Opening Reception on Friday, August 30, as well as a Member & Donor Preview. Click the link above for more details. 

 

Presented by the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, the exhibition and sale runs from 12 pm to 6 pm each day. Admission is free.  The exhibition features the work of more than 200 artists from the mid-Atlantic region. The show includes works in a wide range of artistic media, including:

 

• sculpture

• painting and drawing

• ceramics

• glass

• jewelry

• fiber arts

• photography

• furniture

• works on paper

As part of our Labor Day weekend festivities, this dance will be completely FREE and open to the public! It's a perfect opportunity to give our Waltzes a try.

 

Waltz Time presents a beginning waltz lesson from 2:45 to 3:30 pm, followed by an afternoon of waltzes and other couples dances to live music.  Dancing runs from 3:30 to 6 pm.  As always, no partner is required for this dance in the Spanish Ballroom, and the cost of admission includes the lesson.

 

Today's dance features live music by The Latter Day Lizards. With David G Langford, Bill Tomczak, Kate Barnes, and Dave Longford

The Family Dance program is a wonderful addition to the other family-oriented programs at Glen Echo Park. Spend the afternoon dancing with your children. Each of the family dances features live music and called dances from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Bring your entire family, neighbors, birthday party, and girl or boy scout troop.

Come and join the fun in the Spanish Ballroom for the Glen Echo Fire Department's annual Bingo Night, which has been held at Glen Echo Park since the 1930s! Get your bingo cards and play for a whopping stage-full of prizes. Bid on fabulous items in the silent auction. Enjoy the Friday Night Dance in the Bumper Car Pavilion. Words Out Loud: A Spoken Word Series

The Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to host Words Out Loud, a monthly spoken word series! 

 

Meetings typically take place the first Friday of each month and feature readings by accomplished authors, followed by literary trivia and an open mic session.

 

Room 302 is in the North Arcade building. Enter to the right of the neon POPCORN sign across from the Carousel and take the stairs or elevator to the third floor.

 

Melanie S. Hatter is an award-winning author of two novels and one short story collection. 
Selected by Edwidge Danticat, Malawi’s Sisters won the inaugural Kimbilio National Fiction Prize,
published by Four Way Books in 2019. The Color of My Soul won the 2011 Washington Writers’
Publishing House Fiction Prize, and Let No One Weep for Me, Stories of Love and Loss was
released in 2015. Melanie is a participating author with the PEN/Faulkner Writers in Schools
program, and serves on the board of the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation. 
 
Steven Leyva was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and raised in Houston, Texas. His poems have appeared or are forthcoming in 2 Bridges Review, Fledgling Rag, The Light Ekphrastic, jubilat, Vinyl, and Prairie Schooner. He is a Cave Canem fellow and author of the chapbook Low Parish.  Steven holds a MFA from the University of Baltimore, where he is an assistant professor in the Klein Family School of Communications Design.

The National Carousel Association is hosting their annual convention in DC this year and spending the afternoon of Saturday 9/14 at the park for a series of talks about carousels and preservation work.  Learn more about restoration, mechanical elements, the approaches of various makers, and how they achieve their style today.

 

Talks about carousels and their differences with: Tobin Fraley on "Carvers and Carving Styles"; Rosa Patton on "Painting Styles of the Different Makers" ; Todd Goings on "Comparing Machinery and Frames"

 

Since 1973 the National Carousel Association has been working to keep America's remaining carousels in operation. Through a wide range of programs and projects, the NCA has participated in the restoration and preservation of many of the antique carousels in operation in our country today.

The Glen Echo Park Partnership presents a DANCE PARTY with the renowned Soul Crackers in the historic Spanish Ballroom. The music encompasses Memphis & Motown soul, and features timeless songs by artists like Jr. Walker, Otis Redding, and Sam & Dave. Over their 35-year career, the Soul Crackers have performed at The White House and throughout the VA, MD, DC area at notable venues.

 

A beginner dance lesson with Clyde Wright & Sacha Baniel-Stark will run from 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm, and is included in the cost of admission.  Following the lesson, dancing runs from 9:00 pm to midnight.
