The Washington Folk Festival is back for its 39th year at Glen Echo Park. This FREE festival, presented by the Folklore Society of Greater Washington and the Glen Echo Park Partnership, celebrates the many folk music, dance and craft traditions of the greater Washington area. The Festival features over 400 of the best traditional musicians, storytellers, dancers, and craftspeople representing our diverse and multi-faceted region.

 

Seven stages simultaneously present music and dance for a total of nearly 60 hours of live performance. The festival also includes a storytelling stage, dance workshops in the Spanish Ballroom, a craft marketplace in the Bumper Car Pavilion, and many spontaneous picking sessions in the Park’s picnic grove.

Enjoy an evening of live music with Flower Hill String Band.  The Flower Hill String Band serves up soul-satisfying classic bluegrass and contemporary acoustic music for a family-friendly good time. You’re likely to hear a familiar Celtic, old-time, or traditional gospel tune--as well as a country song or two. And even a few modern pop-rock numbers done FHSB style. Hailing from Gaithersburg, MD, the Flower Hill String Band takes its name from the local neighborhood where some of the members live.

 

The Bumper Car Pavilion is completely covered; concerts will be held rain or shine. Our cafe, Praline at Glen Echo, will be open, or you can bring a picnic dinner. The Dentzel carousel will be open from 7 - 9 pm, $1.25/ride.

Art Walk in the Park: June

Come join us for some refreshments while you walk around the park watching artists work. Along with the open studios, the Popcorn, Stone Tower, and Park View Galleries will be open as well. In addition to activities in our visual arts studios, the Washington Conservatory of Music presents a “Casual Concerts” series to coincide with Art Walk. Art Walks are on every first Friday from May until September. 

 

Words Out Loud: A Spoken Word Series

The Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to host Words Out Loud, a monthly spoken word series! 

 

Meetings typically take place the first Friday of each month and feature readings by accomplished authors, followed by literary trivia and an open mic session.

 

Room 302 is in the North Arcade building. Enter to the right of the neon POPCORN sign across from the Carousel and take the stairs or elevator to the third floor.

 

Joseph Ross is the author of four poetry collections: Raising King (2020) Ache (2017) Gospel of
Dust (2013) and Meeting Bone Man (2012). His poems appear in many anthologies and literary
journals including Southern Quarterly, Xavier Review, Poet Lore, and Drumvoices Revue. He has
received six Pushcart Prize nominations and is the winner of the 2012 Pratt Library / Little
Patuxent Review Poetry Prize. He teaches English at Gonzaga College High School in
Washington, D.C. and writes regularly at www.JosephRoss.net.
 
Kelly Thackston is a poet that explores nature, family struggles, emotional challenges and
redemption within her writing. She has been writing poetry since second grade. Her recent
poems explore themes of grief and transformation. A technical writer by day and
self-proclaimed “folk poet,” Kelly strives to capture and elevate bits of her world with honesty
and hope. She also enjoys dancing, photography, and hiking.

American Swing Music & Dance is proud to present a swing dance with live music by the legendary Big Bad Voodoo Daddy in the historic Spanish Ballroom. Together for over 25 years, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has appeared in concert venues across the world and sold millions of records, and their music has been heard in hundreds of movies and television shows. With sold out concerts from the Hollywood Bowl to Lincoln Center, appearances with many of the country's finest symphony orchestras, and television appearances ranging from Dancing with the Stars to Superbowl XXXIII, the band continues its decades-long mission to celebrate and revitalize jazz and swing music—America's original musical art form—and bring joy to audiences around the world. A beginner swing dance lesson with Tom & Debra of Gottaswing is included in the ticket price and runs from 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm. The dance begins at 9:00 pm. 

 

There will be a beginner swing lesson with Tom and Debra 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm and the dance will be from 9:00 pm - 11:30 pm.

The 6th annual House Tour Fundraiser will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Cabin John Citizens Association by featuring seven Cabin John homes. All proceeds from the House Tour support the arts and educational programs at Glen Echo Park. Tickets are $50 per person, or $40 for Glen Echo Park Partnership Members. Tickets include shuttle transportation, self-guided access to the homes, and light refreshments. The House Tour will run rain or shine.

 

Tickets are also available for purchase at the event. Please visit the check-in table for purchases on June 8.

Enjoy an evening of live music with Squeeze BayouThe Squeeze Bayou Band plays traditional Cajun and zydeco dance music from Southwestern Louisiana. The band specializes in playing two steps and waltzes, however the music reflects a blend of many styles including country music, blues, and Creole. Most of their material comes from traditional sources and the vocals are sung in Cajun French.

The musicians have been performing traditional music at dances, festivals, parties and other events in the Washington D.C. area for over 15 years.

Enjoy an evening of live music with renowned Venezuelan musician Ramon Gonzalez.  Gonzalez plays a multitude of instruments, but he is especially known for his expertise on bass guitar, acoustic guitar, and piano. Other instruments include: Cuatro, Mandolina, Vibes, Cavaquino, Flute, Recorder, and Bandola. His music encompasses Jazz, Brazilian Jazz, Latin Jazz, Latin (salsa, and more.) Brazilian (samba, bossa.) Venezuelan Folklore, other Latin American Folklore, European, Mediterranean, American Pop, Classic American standards, Oldies, Soul...and special requests!

Heritage Days

Heritage Days is a two-day, county-wide festival sponsored by Heritage Tourism Alliance of Montgomery County (Heritage Montgomery). Glen Echo Park is one of many venues in the county offering special programming - FREE of charge- for Heritage Days weekend.

 

In the Bumper Car Pavilion, there will be live blues music by Clarence Turner. There will also be clips from the upcoming film, There Ain't No Back to a Merry Go Round, featuring interviews with 1960s protesters advocating for desegregation of the former privately-owned amusement park, now arts center.

 

Other Heritage Days Events!

Each year, on the last weekend of June, Heritage Montgomery hosts its signature event, the annual Heritage Days celebration. This event with free admission offers visitors an opportunity to sample numerous sites representing the history, culture, and natural beauty of Montgomery County. Saturday, June 29 & Sunday, June 30, 2019 – noon to 4pm
