Journeys: Marketa Jirouskova

Mondays through Saturdays, 10am to 6pm
Winter's Eve: Dec. 8
Presenter: Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture Location: Park View Gallery Admission: Free Contact Email: info@glenechopark.org Contact Phone: 301-634-2222
The title "Journeys" refers to Marketa Jirouskova's main source of inspiration: a journey itself as a long, arduous travel in search of nature's highlights, in the footsteps of earlier explorers or following her own paths. The exhibit presents images of exotic birds and iguanas on isolated islands in the Pacific Ocean, penguins and polar bears with iceberg backdrops in Antarctica and the North Pole, and the highest mountains on Earth in the Himalaya. Jirouskova creates a wonderland composed of pristine uninhabited undisturbed places, difficult to leave for its beauty and harmony, where human traces are still non-existent or minimal. Jirouskova traveled to those remote destinations to create us evocative, almost painting-like, intimate portraits of our natural world. She hopes to inspire her public with respect, appreciation and admiration of world's nature worth preserving.

Presenter: Words Out Loud Recommended Ages: All ages welcome Location: Room 302, North Arcade Building Admission: Free Contact Phone: 240-899-6514
The Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to host Words Out Loud, a monthly spoken word series!
Meetings typically take place the first Friday of each month and feature readings by accomplished authors, followed by literary trivia and an open mic session. The flyer for the December date is available HERE.
Featured authors this month:
The Surrey Street poets began as strangers, meeting for classes with American University poet, David Keplinger. Following that series, every participant wanted to continue and, since 2010 they have met as a group, no longer strangers, at Judy Bowles home on Surrey Street in Chevy Chase and more recently in the District. They have learned to listen to each other and to themselves with the same keen attention as David. He taught them with his generous example to rewrite, rearrange and rethink each poem to its strongest notes. The poets are Judith Bowles, Betsy Holleman Burke, Henry Crawford, Joanne Rocky Delaplaine, Majda Gama, Renee Gherity, Margi Grady, Leah Johnson, David Keplinger, Dennis Kirschbaum, Meghan O'Connell, Ann Philips, Ellen Sazzman, Amy Young. Such Friends As These is an anthology of their work, self published in 2018. The title is a quote of William Butler Yeats: "Think where man's glory most begins and ends, and say my glory was I had such friends."
Room 302 is in the North Arcade building. Enter to the right of the neon POPCORN sign across from the carousel and take the stairs or elevator to the third floor.

Recovered Memory: New York & Paris 1960-1980
December 14, 2018 - January 20, 2019
Saturdays, 1 to 4pm and Sundays, 1 to 7pm
Reception, Gallery Talk, Book Signing: Friday, December 14, 6 to 8pm
Presenter: Photoworks Location: Photoworks Gallery - First Floor Arcade Building Contact Phone: (301) 634-2274 http://www.glenechophotoworks.org
The Photoworks Gallery is proud to host the first solo exhibition of work from Frank Van Riper's bestselling latest book, Recovered Memory: New York & Paris 1960-1980. The exhibition opens Friday evening December 14, 6 to 8pm and also will be accompanied by a lecture and book-signing. The show runs through January 20, 2019.
Recovered Memory: New York & Paris 1960-1980 is a meditation on time and place: before the internet and 24/7 news; when one could visit the Eiffel Tower without seeing police and automatic weapons, when a ride on the New York subway cost 15 cents, when the smell of fresh-baked baguettes wafted over nearly every Parisian neighborhood, and when the Coney Island parachute ride still thrilled thousands. Van Riper's striking black and white photographs, coupled with his eloquent text, capture the 20th-century romance and grit of New York more than half a century ago, and Paris, some forty years ago. It was a time when the pace of life was slower and somehow less threatening, people talked to each other instead of texting on their iPhones, and you literally had to stop and smell the coffee or freshly baked bagel.
Veteran photographer, author and journalist Frank Van Riper has been a Photoworks faculty for more than a dozen years. His award-winning career in journalism began in 1967 at the New York Daily News where for 20 years he served as a White House correspondent, national political correspondent and Washington Bureau news editor. After that, he was the photography columnist of the Washington Post for 19 years.

Real entertainment from an era that was not only filled with great singers, performers, and great songs but whose legacy has become synonymous with what great entertainment really is. From the swingin’ sounds of Basie, and contemporaries like Michael Buble, and Harry Connick Jr., to the beautiful ballads of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and back to the high energy Latin Dance big band sound, Good Shot Judy will have you up and dancing! We are THRILLED to present this band from Williamsburg, VA, in a traditional swing dance environment. Expect a packed dance floor!
The dance includes a beginner swing lesson with Tom & Debra from 8 - 9 pm. Band plays two sets 9-11:45pm; DJ music 11:45 pm - midnight. Beginners are welcome and no partner is necessary.

Mr. Boogie's back in town! Mitch Woods and His Rocket 88’s are the torch bearers of a great American musical heritage, taking their inspiration from the great jump n’ boogie outfits and swingin’ little big bands of the 40’s. Mitch takes his cue from Louis Jordan, Cab Calloway, Joe and Jimmie Liggins, Louis Prima, to name just a few.
In 1985, 72 year-old Pinetop Perkins, one of the founding fathers of Boogie Woogie and considered to be one of the greatest Blues and Boogie pianists, selected 27 year-old Daryl Davis to succeed him in the piano and vocal slot of the Muddy Waters Legendary Blues Band. Daryl Davis has worked with countless greats such as Elvis Presley’s Jordanaires, The Coasters and he is a long-standing, regular player, in Chuck Berry’s current band.
Together, Mitch Woods and Daryl Davis will provide a fabulous swinging new year! Beginner swing lesson 8-9pm, dance 9pm-12:30am. Purchase tickets HERE
