The Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to host Words Out Loud, a monthly spoken word series!

Meetings typically take place the first Friday of each month and feature readings by accomplished authors, followed by literary trivia and an open mic session. The flyer for the December date is available HERE

Featured authors this month:

The Surrey Street poets began as strangers, meeting for classes with American University poet, David Keplinger.  Following that series, every participant wanted to continue and, since 2010 they have met as a group, no longer strangers, at Judy Bowles home on Surrey Street in Chevy Chase and more recently in the District.  They have learned to listen to each other and to themselves with the same keen attention as David.  He taught them with his generous example to rewrite, rearrange and rethink each poem to its strongest notes. The poets are Judith Bowles, Betsy Holleman Burke, Henry Crawford, Joanne Rocky Delaplaine, Majda Gama, Renee Gherity, Margi Grady, Leah Johnson, David Keplinger, Dennis Kirschbaum, Meghan O'Connell, Ann Philips, Ellen Sazzman, Amy Young.  Such Friends As These is an anthology of their work, self published in 2018.  The title is a quote of William Butler Yeats: "Think where man's glory most begins and ends, and say my glory was I had such friends."

Room 302 is in the North Arcade building. Enter to the right of the neon POPCORN sign across from the carousel and take the stairs or elevator to the third floor.

The Photoworks Gallery is pleased to present Places We Find. This exhibition has photographs by two photographers, Sandy Sugawara and Catiana Garcia Kilroy.

Sandy Sugawara's photographs are framed around objects encountered in everyday life, things like washing machines, electrical cords, office phones, window shades and bus stops. They are the kind of objects that rarely warrant a second glance. Yet when a splash of sunlight or an unexpected spot of color appears, an otherwise mundane object can take on an otherworldly radiance. This is the kind Sugawara seeks to find, intimate scene with a quiet energy, a place where viewers can learn to exhale.

Catiana Garcia Kilroy's photographs are about showing how common places can become a source of surprise and discovery. With this objective, their framing puts together unexpected fragments of place, objects or people. Or scenes in they use scenes in the forefront of the photograph, forcing viewers to slow down the process of seeing and discovery. By making viewers slow down, Kilroy hopes to help them pay more attention to details and unexpected interactions between objects, colors, and shapes.

Halley Shoenberg has been playing clarinet and saxophone for dances at Glen Echo Park for 20 years, most recently with her own group, “Halley’s Hot Gumbo Swingtet,” the Tom Cunningham Orchestra, the Craig Gildner Big Band and Shannon Gunn and the Bullettes. For nine years Halley played Glen Echo Sunday tea dances with the La Salle Dance Orchestra, which focused on 1920's and 30's ballroom dance music and she acquired the music from that group to perform with her 11-piece Revival Jazz Band. She also learned to dance the dances such as Lindy Hop, Charleston, Blues, Salsa and Tango and likes to dance during band breaks or go out for an evening of dancing. She pulls together some of the finest DC area musicians for lively music events.

The title "Journeys" refers to Marketa Jirouskova's main source of inspiration: a journey itself as a long, arduous travel in search of nature's highlights, in the footsteps of earlier explorers or following her own paths. The exhibit presents images of exotic birds and iguanas on isolated islands in the Pacific Ocean, penguins and polar bears with iceberg backdrops in Antarctica and the North Pole, and the highest mountains on Earth in the Himalaya. Jirouskova creates a wonderland composed of pristine uninhabited undisturbed places, difficult to leave for its beauty and harmony, where human traces are still non-existent or minimal. Jirouskova traveled to those remote destinations to create us evocative, almost painting-like, intimate portraits of our natural world. She hopes to inspire her public with respect, appreciation and admiration of world's nature worth preserving.

The old saying "Dancing is music made visible" is what makes Lindy Hop special. We as swing dancers make our dancing reflect the music. But how do we do it? How do we interpret the music right at the moment we are dancing? In this class you’ll get some “inside” ideas that will really get your more connected to the music while you’re dancing, even if you’ve never heard the song before. This class, open to all levels, is taught by Swing Dance Hall of Fame member Rusty Frank.

Hear for yourself why Frankie Manning, one of the original Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers and an icon to the Swing World, called the Tom Cunningham Orchestra “the Swingin’est Band in all the Land!” The 16-piece orchestra’s appearances at Glen Echo Park are a Washington institution going back to 1983 and celebrated on TV, radio, newspapers and in books. So take a tip from The Washington Post’s Mike Joyce, “The Cunningham Band is bound to please.”
