This exhibition will present recent oils and pastels from artist Gonzalo Ruiz Navarro about the elusive nature of color. Gonzalo finds his inspiration in how light reveals reality and how it affects the color we see in objects and landscapes. He is a realist painter but when asked about his favorite subject, he replies “color”. There are many theories about how color works in nature and how you can interpret that in a painting, but ultimately, Gonzalo finds that is something we will always try to interpret and never will be fully captured.

Swing Dance

Admission: $20 advance

Advance tickets available HERE for $20

Institute of Musical Traditions is proud to present a special Gypsy Jazz Swing Dance with Grammy Award-winner John Jorgenson and the John Jorgenson Quintet!

At 7:30 pm the night begins with an hour-long dance workshop, and then at 8.30pm the DANCE BEGINS! (but don't worry, we'll have plenty of seating if you're still not quite ready to take the floor!)

John Jorgenson’s style has been called “Gypsy Jazz” after the dynamic string-driven swing created by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli in 1930s Paris, but John Jorgenson’s compositions draw in elements from Latin, Romanian, Classical, Rock and Greek music, so “21st Century World Music” is perhaps a more apt description.

The John Jorgenson Quintet is the only American act to ever headline the prestigious Django Reinhardt Memorial Festival in France, and has been featured at other “Djangofests” in the US, UK, Germany and Canada. For the films Gattaca and Head in the Clouds, Jorgenson was tapped to recreate Django’s music, and in the latter he even appeared onscreen as Django with stars Charlize Theron and Penelope Cruz.

At performances of the John Jorgenson Quintet, audiences are awestruck by not only Jorgenson’s skillful guitar playing, but the solo clarinet and bouzouki as well. Djangobooks perfectly articulates, “If he comes around, don’t miss him. The show is golden. The music soars.”

The Photoworks Gallery is pleased to present Places We Find. This exhibition has photographs by two photographers, Sandy Sugawara and Catiana Garcia Kilroy.

Sandy Sugawara's photographs are framed around objects encountered in everyday life, things like washing machines, electrical cords, office phones, window shades and bus stops. They are the kind of objects that rarely warrant a second glance. Yet when a splash of sunlight or an unexpected spot of color appears, an otherwise mundane object can take on an otherworldly radiance. This is the kind Sugawara seeks to find, intimate scene with a quiet energy, a place where viewers can learn to exhale.

Catiana Garcia Kilroy's photographs are about showing how common places can become a source of surprise and discovery. With this objective, their framing puts together unexpected fragments of place, objects or people. Or scenes in they use scenes in the forefront of the photograph, forcing viewers to slow down the process of seeing and discovery. By making viewers slow down, Kilroy hopes to help them pay more attention to details and unexpected interactions between objects, colors, and shapes.

We know how it is, babies. Ever since you joined your family, your parents have been talking about how they never get a chance to go out swing dancing anymore, so tell them about this great Saturday DJ dance that's parent and children-friendly. They won't have to worry about getting a babysitter, because the whole family can attend together. They won't have to worry about bothering other dancers, because you're all in the same playpen! The music will be soft and the lights will be up, so Mommies and Daddies can get their swing on in a family-friendly setting.

Children must be supervised by a guardian at all times. Adults do not have to be accompanied by a baby (but they must like babies!).

Parents/guardians are entirely responsible for their children and child care is NOT provided by GEPPAC or American Swing.
