Enjoy an evening of live blues music with Fast Eddie & the SlowpokesThey have performed throughout the DC – Maryland- Virginia region, from The Kennedy Center to festivals to roadhouses. They have shared the stage with Victor Wainwright (2016 BMA Entertainer of the Year), The Nighthawks, The Andy T Band, Jimmy Thackery, and Phil Pemberton of Roomful of Blues. They won the 2016 and 2012 DC Blues Society Battle of the Bands and represented the DC Blues Society at the 2017 and 2013 The International Blues Challenge in Memphis! In 2017, they were Semi-Finalists at the International Blues Challenge!

 

The Bumper Car Pavilion is completely covered; concerts will be held rain or shine. Our cafe, Praline at Glen Echo, will be open, or you can bring a picnic dinner. The Dentzel carousel will be open from 7 - 9 pm, $1.25/ride.

Words Out Loud: A Spoken Word Series

The Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to welcome Words Out Loud, a monthly spoken word series! 

 

Meetings typically take place the first Friday of each month and feature readings by accomplished authors, followed by an open mic session. The flyer for the August date is available HERE

 

Featured authors this month:

 

David Martin/aka Q.R. Quasar is a poet, playwright, novelist, scholar and translator of Arabic & Persian poetry, with work in Poetry, Hawaii Review, Al Arabiyya. His seven books include Buddha Time and Watching the Universe Die (Global Scholarly Publications.org). His translations include Expanse of Green and Sepehry’s Persian poetry (UNESCO/Kalimat).

 

Maritza Rivera is the creator of a short form of poetry called Blackjack, the publisher of Casa Mariposa Press, and hosts the annual Mariposa Poetry Retreat and the annual Mariposa Reunion Reading .  She leads workshops  at the Writer’s Center in Bethesda and is the author of About You, A Mother’s War, A Baker’s Dozen, Twenty-One: Blackjack Poems, and The Blackjack Poetry Playing Cards.

 

Tony Bernardi is an interdisciplinary multi-creative thinker whose portfolio of creative works reflects his passion for form and meaning in art, philosophy, and science.  Tony has authored 3 longer works – Dialogues, an ode to longing, Tobias, a novel in progress, and Field of Perception, a collection of aphorisms and meditations.  Tony is also an accomplished musician and painter.

 

Room 302 is in the North Arcade building. Enter to the right of the neon POPCORN sign across from the carousel and take the stairs or elevator to the third floor.

Registration for Fall & Winter 2018-2019 classes will open for WALK-INs ONLY on August 4. The office will be open 10am to 6pm. For most classes, it is not necessary to register on the first day.

 

Online registration will open on Sunday, August 5, at 12pm.

Enjoy an evening of live music with Justin Trawick and The Common GoodJustin Trawick has been performing in the Washington DC area and along the East Coast since 2006, citing musical influences like Bob Schneider, The Tallest Man on Earth, G. Love, Old Crow Medicine Show, and David Gray. In June of 2015, Trawick released his first single, "Goodbye," under the band name “Justin Trawick and the Common Good.” Trawick has opened for over 30 national acts including Suzanne Vega, Wyclef Jean, Brett Dennen, Blues Traveler, Enter The Haggis, Bob Schneider, and Edwin McCain, and shared bills with Dr. Dogg and The Avett Brothers. In February of 2014, Trawick won “Song of the Year” at the Washington Area Music Awards for his song "All the Places That I've Been."

Frontline Arts + Warrior Writers Exhibition

Co-presented with Community Building Art Works & USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore, The Combat Paper/Warrior Writers exhibition and reading is the culminating event of a four-day art-making and writing workshop at the USO Warrior and Family Center in Bethesda. During the workshop, Service Members and Veterans make paper out of used military uniforms and then write and create art on that paper. At the culminating exhibition at the Park, the public is invited to view the artwork and listen to a reading/performance by participants. Previous exhibitions have been held at The Torpedo Factory Art Center, Lorton Workhouse Arts Center, Washington Artworks, Ratner Museum, and the Art League Alexandria.

Enjoy an evening of live music with the Texas Chainsaw Hornsa funk-soul-blues-R&B band that came together fifteen years ago in the suburbs of Washington D.C. The main focus of the band is the tight, five-piece horn section featuring trumpeter/arranger Tony Murtha, whose work has been featured on American Idol, the NFL Super Bowl Halftime Show, the Disney Channel, Comedy Central’s Colbert Report, and commercials for Subway and the Washington Nationals. With almost a dozen members, the band draws on a wide variety of influences, ranging from Ray Charles and James Brown, to ZZ Top and The Tower of Power.
