Organic Growth: Meaghan Busch & Annalisa Leonessa
August 3 to 26
Saturdays & Sundays, 11am to 6pm
Art Walk and Opening Reception: Friday, August 3, 6 to 8pm
Presenter: Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture Location: Stone Tower Gallery Admission: Free Contact Email: info@glenechopark.org Contact Phone: 301-634-2222 http://glenechopark.org/exhibitions
The Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to present Organic Growth. Print artist Meaghan Busch and fiber artist Annalisa Leonessa combine in this unique show about growth. Busch’s growth is through hard times – from dealing with the mental decline of a parent and becoming a parent. This body of work is bittersweet, embracing hard reality with warm feelings from the past. Her works are wistful and joyful, embracing the duality of adult life. For Leonessa, growth is the process of making each felt piece. Making vessels has become a way to challenge the limits of the felt-making process. Leonessa must plan her work carefully, choosing techniques that allow her to maintain an open dialog between her imaginary ideas and wool’s natural properties. Her vessels are influenced by natural forms and color to evoke impressions of the organic world. Wool has an intrinsic quality of impermanence, common to all textiles, which can also symbolize the status of our own life, and reinforce the pull towards growth and change.

The Miraculous in the Mundane
July 6 to August 12, 2018
Saturdays, 1 to 4pm and Sundays, 1 to 7pm
Opening Reception & Artist Talk: Sunday, July 8, 5 to 7pm
Presenter: Photoworks Location: Photoworks Gallery - First Floor Arcade Building Contact Phone: (301) 634-2274 http://www.glenechophotoworks.org
Against a tidal wave of perfectly-crafted instagram squares, three documentary photographers are making pictures that honor the disregarded, even disdained, condition of authentic childhood. In these photos, the photographers uphold raw truths; the good, the bad, and the banal moments typical in the lives of children. It's no accident that these photographers are mothers themselves - tempered by the all too real experiences of bringing up very real children. By honoring and documenting the gritty truth, they craft a photographic style that challenges contrived portraiture and celebrates the miraculous in the mundane.
The photographers are Aniya Legnaro, Katie Jett Walls, and Chelsea Silbereis. Aniya Legnaro is a documentary wedding and family photographer living in Barbados with her daughters and husband, 2 dogs, and 5 turtles. She is an avid surfer, reader and coffee drinker and firmly believes that kids and the elderly hold the key to life. Kids have fantastic imaginations, with no fear or judgment. The elderly have fantastic stories from life lived and know time is too short to have fear or judgments.
Katie Jett Walls is a documentary photographer specializing in families and street photography. A proud resident of the District, Katie lives in a DC rowhouse with her nerdy husband and precocious kindergartner. Though her family would tell you all she ever does is take pictures, or talk about pictures, in fact she also reads lots of British crime novels, drinks coffee with the other school moms, and binge watches all the best shows.
Chelsea Silbereis is a photographer living in Connecticut. She creates photo essays of family life. She lives with her husband, two children, a dog and a cat. She likes to imagine the ghosts of pets past are also members of the household.

Swing Dance
Saturday, August 25, 8:00 pm - midnight
Presenter: American Swing Recommended Ages: All ages welcome Location: Spanish Ballroom Admission: $20 / $15 ages 11-17 Contact Email: Debra@gottaswing.com http://www.americanswing.org
American Swing presents a swing dance with live music in the Spanish Ballroom.
At an impressively young age, the talented Josh Christina has already seen the big city lights of country music capital Nashville when recording his first album, as well as performing on the international television stage of Ireland’s Late Late Show.
Josh Christina is the future of Rock ’n’ Roll, folks! He plays it the way it was meant to be played. How this 21-year-old musician plays with the soul of Ray Charles, the piano with the feel of Jerry Lee Lewis, the energy of Elvis Presley and the rhythm of the legendary rock n’ roll guitar player, Chuck Berry, who all had their biggest hits before he was born, in fact, before his parents were born, is beyond me!
— Daryl Davis - Legendary Blues Musician
The dance includes a beginner swing lesson with Tom & Debra from 8 - 9 pm, followed by dancing from 9 pm - midnight. Beginners are welcome and no partner is necessary.
