Theresa Reer and Jen Vaughn are Wounded Warriors and Veterans undergoing treatment as patients of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The Walter Reed Society has a successful multi-year collaboration placing students in art glass activities. The students come to the Art Glass Center’s studio in Glen Echo Park to develop their art skills as they readjust to civilian life. Art Glass Center’s staff offer instruction in fused glass art to small groups of Wounded Warriors and Veterans. The experience involves creating designs and choosing colors; selecting, cutting, and grinding fusible glass; and hand-crafting glass artworks for fusing in an instructor-operated kiln.  As students’ skills progress, instruction is given in forming more complex glass shapes for two-dimensional art pieces, and in creating three-dimensional glass art. Individual creativity is a key element of the environment.

The Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to present Time Out: Paintings and Photography by Patrick and Lisa Sieg. Oil painter Patrick Sieg and photographer Lisa Sieg often meld into one another focusing a symbiotic lens on a specific scene, element, or feeling to portray how extraordinary nature is. Nature has incredible power impacting our attitudes, our lives, our perspectives. In our fast-paced world, awareness, observation and respect for the environment is needed now more than ever, a necessity for turbulent times and a restorative tonic for the soul. Log off, put down your phone, and step outside. Look up, look down, look all around, feel the air, notice the small stuff, breathe. Truly a great escape in a matter of moments. Time out for your mind, body, and soul.

Using silver and stones meaning is infused in the creations, which  attract wearers who may have experienced a similar story.

Against a tidal wave of perfectly-crafted instagram squares, three documentary photographers are making pictures that honor the disregarded, even disdained, condition of authentic childhood. In these photos, the photographers uphold raw truths; the good, the bad, and the banal moments typical in the lives of children. It's no accident that these photographers are mothers themselves - tempered by the all too real experiences of bringing up very real children. By honoring and documenting the gritty truth, they craft a photographic style that challenges contrived portraiture and celebrates the miraculous in the mundane.

The photographers are Aniya Legnaro, Katie Jett Walls, and Chelsea Silbereis. Aniya Legnaro is a documentary wedding and family photographer living in Barbados with her daughters and husband, 2 dogs, and 5 turtles. She is an avid surfer, reader and coffee drinker and firmly believes that kids and the elderly hold the key to life. Kids have fantastic imaginations, with no fear or judgment. The elderly have fantastic stories from life lived and know time is too short to have fear or judgments.

Katie Jett Walls is a documentary photographer specializing in families and street photography. A proud resident of the District, Katie lives in a DC rowhouse with her nerdy husband and precocious kindergartner. Though her family would tell you all she ever does is take pictures, or talk about pictures, in fact she also reads lots of British crime novels, drinks coffee with the other school moms, and binge watches all the best shows.

Chelsea Silbereis is a photographer living in Connecticut. She creates photo essays of family life. She lives with her husband, two children, a dog and a cat. She likes to imagine the ghosts of pets past are also members of the household.

The Craig Gildner Big Band presents a swing dance with live music in the historic Bumper Car Pavilion!

The Craig Gildner Big Band is a thirteen piece repertoire orchestra authentically recreating the sounds of the swing era made famous by Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Artie Shaw and others. Arrangements are direct transcriptions and stock selections that would have been played back in the day by bands across the country. Adding to the period feel, the rhythm section boasts calfskin drums arranged in a manner much like Krupa’s, gut wound bass strings, acoustic rhythm guitar on a vintage Gibson L7, and stride piano solos.

The musicianship is of the highest caliber. Bandleader Craig Gildner handpicked each and every section from DC’s pool of talented musicians. The band can whisper and scream… and everything in between…all in just one song!

American Swing presents a swing dance with the Glenn Miller Orchestra in the Spanish Ballroom!

Since the time he formed his own orchestra in 1937 until his untimely disappearance over the English Channel in 1944, the Glenn Miller Orchestra provided the music that was the backbone of the Lindy Hop era. Classic songs like Tuxedo Junction, Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Sunrise Serenade, Pennsylvania 6-5000, In the Mood, and more, will never go out of style.
