Alexander is having a bad day. A terrible day. A horrible day. To be quite honest, it's a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. But then, everybody has bad days, sometimes. Not only does Alexander wake up with gum in his hair, but his mother forgets to pack him dessert, and his best friend decides he's not his best friend anymore. And if that's not bad enough, Alexander's brothers don't have any cavities but - he does. And just when it can't get any worse, there are lima beans for supper and - yuck!- kissing on the TV. It is enough to make anyone want to go to Australia.

My Camera, My Voice: Photographs by Michael A. McCoy

Presenter: Photoworks

Location: Photoworks Gallery - First Floor Arcade Building

Contact Phone: (301) 634-2274

http://www.glenechophotoworks.org

Born and raised in Baltimore, Michael A. McCoy picked up a camera as a young teen. It wasn't until his two tours of duty in Iraq and the loss of his mother, though, that McCoy took up photography as means of focus, expression, and escape. His instinct for light and composition combined with his curious mind and engaging personality produce tender yet powerful portraits of fellow veterans combating PTSD, individuals supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, men in barber shops, youth at play, and mother and fathers with children. In other words his portraits, and his camera, are his voice and they speak of both the struggles and the joys of life and deployment.

Michael A. McCoy's work has been featured in Time, Rolling Stone, and The Baltimore Sun. In 2017, Time named McCoy one of the "12 African American Photographers You Should Follow Right Now."

We'll also be featuring women teachers, DJ, and emcee!

Steeped in the tradition of the masters but forging ahead with a style all its own, “Shannon Gunn and the Bullettes” is the new all-women jazz ensemble based out of the DC area. Laid back but hard swinging, the Bullettes bring all generations together to enjoy a dynamite performance. The Bullettes began as a “dream” of Shannon Gunn, trombone player and graduate of the George Mason University Masters in Jazz Studies program. The Bullettes are a musical organization that uplifts women in jazz, creates networking opportunities, and provides a positive role model for aspiring jazz musicians in the DC area.

For 50 years, James Buswell has lived a fascinating double life as a performer and a pedagogue. He has performed as solo violinist with virtually all the major orchestras in North America, and throughout Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. He is an equally esteemed pedagogue who held faculty positions at two of the most prestigious music schools in the US. He continues to give master classes around the world. His experiences give him a unique perspective on the peculiar conflicts and reinforcements of those two professions, and on what he sees as a growing crisis that threatens the very nature of art in our culture - in increasing presumption that numbers are more accurate than words or anything more related to the human spirit. Buswell is well-known as an engaging speaker and thoughtful knowledgeable musician.

The Craig Gildner Big Band presents a swing dance with live music in the historic Spanish Ballroom!

The Craig Gildner Big Band is a thirteen piece repertoire orchestra authentically recreating the sounds of the swing era made famous by Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Artie Shaw and others. Arrangements are direct transcriptions and stock selections that would have been played back in the day by bands across the country. Adding to the period feel, the rhythm section boasts calfskin drums arranged in a manner much like Krupa’s, gut wound bass strings, acoustic rhythm guitar on a vintage Gibson L7, and stride piano solos.

The musicianship is of the highest caliber. Bandleader Craig Gildner handpicked each and every section from DC’s pool of talented musicians. The band can whisper and scream… and everything in between…all in just one song!

Enjoy a beginner swing dance lesson at 8:00 pm (included in the admission), followed by dancing until midnight. No partner or prior experience needed.

Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to present I Draw the Line: Oil Paintings by Robert LeMar. In this exhibition of paintings, LeMar experiments with different approaches to outlining, while seeking to maintain a strong sense of realism.  Although done entirely with oil on canvas, every painting is really about the drawn line. Color also plays a major role in the work, as it conveys light and form. Even so, it all starts with a line drawn on canvas. In this work, LeMar seeks to champion that line. Le Mar was the recipient of the Park View Artist Award at the 2017 Labor Day Art Show at Glen Echo Park.

The Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to present The World in Infrared: Landscapes by Sheila Galagan. Local photographer Sheila Galagan offers a selection of photographs shot using infrared capture, an unusual method that when printed in black and white produces striking dark gray skies and white vegetation. Galagan's photographs, mostly landscapes, are taken in local natural settings often with some man-made components. Most of her images are shot with a digital camera modified to respond to near-infrared light. There are also some images taken the old-fashioned way with black and white infrared film. Some of the digital images have textures applied to them to add a further sense of depth. The film images have been printed using the lith printing technique, which uses certain papers and chemicals to produce a similar effect to textured digital images. Galagan has taught photography in several places, including Glen Echo Photoworks and Montgomery County Public Schools. She is also a member of f11, a Women's Photography Collective, which exhibits locally.
