The Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to present Federico A. Ruiz: Land, Sea & Sky: A Minimalist’s Caribbean. Federico A. Ruiz, a D.C. first responder and former military, gives a fresh perspective on the Caribbean landscape. As a descendant of Dominican immigrants, Ruiz is inspired by the Dominican Republic coast that was near his family’s estate. This body of work hints at his impression of the convergence of land, sea and sky. Relying on color, little to no texture and geometric shapes, Ruiz is able to convey distinct horizons and nature’s essence. These minimalist paintings find the visual abstract elements of the Dominican Republic’s Caribbean landscape.

The Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to present Jeff Cooper and Rebecca Hirsh: Crossing Paths. This exhibition pairs two-dimensional work by Rebecca Hirsh alongside three-dimensional sculptures by Jeff Cooper. Cooper admires the ever-changing properties of wood - always shrinking or expanding, darkening, lightening, or aging. Rather than carving from one piece of wood, Cooper assembles pieces of wood, combining the grains and figures. His sculptures attract the eye and invite the viewer to examine the details.

Originally a painter, Rebecca Hirsh explores the medium of wood for this exhibition. Using what she can salvage from Cooper’s studio, Hirsh constructs her collages by painting the pieces of wood and arranging them. She is inspired by color, shapes and lines, and how they occupy space.

Hirsh’s wood collages and Cooper’s wood sculptures reflect the influence each artist has on the other, truly crossing paths.

The Glen Echo Park Partnership is pleased to present Amanda Spaid: Natural Wonders. This exhibition features Spaid’s intricate drawings on wood, highlighting birds that can be found in the DC area--from spectacular and elusive migrants like the Baltimore Oriole and the Scarlet Tanager, birds of prey such as the Peregrine Falcon and Eastern Screech Owl, to backyard favorites such as the Cardinal and Ruby-Throated Hummingbird. She uses the wood grain in a creative way; whether it is the design of the background, or the deciding factor on which bird goes on that particular wood piece.
A Maryland native, Spaid attended the School of Art and Design at Montgomery College in Silver Spring (formerly the Maryland College of Art and Design), and later the Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio, where she earned her Bachelor’s in Illustration. Spaid specializes in colored pencils and other dry media on wood panel as well as digital painting/illustration.

Just saying the "Glenn Miller Orchestra" immediately conjures up images of the Big Band Era. Since the time he formed his own orchestra in 1937 until his untimely disappearance over the English Channel in 1944, the Glenn Miller Orchestra provided the music that was the backbone of the Lindy Hop era. Classic songs like Tuxedo Junction, Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Sunrise Serenade, Pennsylvania 6-5000, In the Mood, and more, will never go out of style.

The Craig Gildner Big Band presents a swing dance with live music in the historic Bumper Car Pavilion!

New in 2017, the Craig Gildner Big Band presents a series of dances celebrating the Unsung Heroes of Swing. The band will shine a spotlight on bandleaders who were instrumental in the development of swing music, but were overshadowed by such luminaries as Goodman, Miller, and Ellington.

The Craig Gildner Big Band is a thirteen piece repertoire orchestra authentically recreating the sounds of the swing era made famous by Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Artie Shaw and others. Arrangements are direct transcriptions and stock selections that would have been played back in the day by bands across the country. Adding to the period feel, the rhythm section boasts calfskin drums arranged in a manner much like Krupa’s, gut wound bass strings, acoustic rhythm guitar on a vintage Gibson L7, and stride piano solos.

The musicianship is of the highest caliber. Bandleader Craig Gildner handpicked each and every section from DC’s pool of talented musicians. The band can whisper and scream… and everything in between…all in just one song!

Enjoy a beginner swing dance lesson at 8:00 pm (included in the admission), followed by dancing until midnight. No partner or prior experience needed.

The Glen Echo Park Partnership presents Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band in the historic Spanish Ballroom. This band is irresistably danceable and you'll have plenty of room to shake it on our beautiful hardwood dance floor (110 feet by 70 feet). Dancing to live music runs from 9 pm - midnight. Doors open at 8:30 pm.

Chopteeth is a 12-piece Afrofunk orchestra exploring the common groove between the funkiest, most hip-shakin’ West African and American popular music on the planet. The core of the Chopteeth sound is Afrobeat: a big-band funk invented by Fela Kuti in 1970’s Nigeria. Afrobeat is a spicy stew of modern jazz, Yoruba tribal music and burning, James Brown-inspired rhythms. Chopteeth’s sets feature original compositions along with updates of African dance classics. Band members serve up lyrics in a total of seven different languages.

Chopteeth has performed on shows with a wide range of critically acclaimed world music, soul and jazz-funk groups, including Parliament Funkadelic, Trombone Shorty, Galactic, Aaron Neville, Cyril Neville, Derek Trucks Band, Ozomatli, Grupo Fantasma, Konono No. 1, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, Gov't Mule, Soulive, Greyboy Allstars, The Iguanas, War, Chuck Brown and many more.

"A storming powerhouse of big-band African funk, Chopteeth is smart, tight and relentlessly driving: a definite don't-miss."  —The Washington Post

"Afrofunk with lunatic energy."  —National Public Radio

"Thunderous and potent. Chopteeth's debut CD takes the band from upbeat Swahili lyrics over a South African pulse one second, to spaghetti Western-inspired instrumentals the next.”  —Billboard

"A sonic explosion happening onstage, Chopteeth will magnetize you with their exotic offerings. There are no limitations to what the band can do musically."  —D.C. Music Download
