The tag line on City Rhythm Orchestra's website says it all: great music, great fun. Their distinct style and sound has been popular in their hometown of Philadelphia and around the world for many years. Led by Pete Spina and Nick Vallerio, their extraordinary performances are always tremendously entertaining. On this special night, the band will be joined onstage by Ray Gelato (no, that's not Tony Bennett), credited for helping kick off the Swing revival in the early '80s. This interest in vintage Swing/Jazz and R&B went massive in the '90s, spreading all over the US, and spawning bands like The Brian Setzer Big Band and Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. Ray is proud to have been a part of the vibrant London club scene of the early- to mid-1980s. Fronting the highly successful band The Chevalier Brothers gained him great experience working before an audience; at their peak, The Chevalier Brothers were playing around 200 shows a year! It was in this band that Ray developed his distinctive Louis Prima influenced vocal style that people enjoy to this day. We are thrilled to welcome City Rhythm and Ray Gelato back to play for the DC swing dance community. We are going to have a BALL.

The dance includes a beginner swing lesson with Tom and Debra from 8 - 9 pm, followed by dancing from 9 pm - midnight.  Beginners are welcome and no partner is necessary.

The Craig Gildner Big Band presents a swing dance with live music in the historic Spanish Ballroom!

New in 2017, the Craig Gildner Big Band presents a series of dances celebrating the Unsung Heroes of Swing. The band will shine a spotlight on bandleaders who were instrumental in the development of swing music, but were overshadowed by such luminaries as Goodman, Miller, and Ellington.

The Craig Gildner Big Band is a thirteen piece repertoire orchestra authentically recreating the sounds of the swing era made famous by Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Artie Shaw and others. Arrangements are direct transcriptions and stock selections that would have been played back in the day by bands across the country. Adding to the period feel, the rhythm section boasts calfskin drums arranged in a manner much like Krupa’s, gut wound bass strings, acoustic rhythm guitar on a vintage Gibson L7, and stride piano solos.

The musicianship is of the highest caliber. Bandleader Craig Gildner handpicked each and every section from DC’s pool of talented musicians. The band can whisper and scream… and everything in between…all in just one song!

Enjoy a beginner swing dance lesson at 8:00 pm (included in the admission), followed by dancing until midnight. No partner or prior experience needed.
