This marionette romp in which three brothers get the goat of a hen-pecked troll, in their attempts to trip-trap-tromp to where the grass is greener. Three variety numbers precede the performance, demonstrating the making of a simple hand puppet, and manipulation of rod puppets and marionettes, as an introduction to the art of puppetry.

ABOUT LAYSSA & ARTHUR

Layssa Liebscher, was born in Rio de Janeiro and at 14 years old she discovered her passion for classical ballet and jazz.

She started learning Latin dance in 2007 and specialized in Brazilian zouk and samba de gafieira during her years as part of Renata Peçanha’s Dance Company in Brazil.

 

In 2012, she started her partnership with Arthur Liebscher. Together they moved to Adelaide, Australia where they started their Latin dance school called Layssa and Arthur Dance.

 

Arthur Liebscher discovered his dance passion in high school. A performer, teacher and choreographer, he started dancing Latin and Ballroom in 2007 and after 3 months was invited to become part of Sport Dance’s company where he learned Brazilian zouk, salsa, samba de gafieira, bolero, tango, cha cha cha and forró. In December 2007 he did his first zouk workshop with Renata Peçanha and has never looked back.

The Glen Echo Park Partnership presents a swing dance with live music by Swingtopia in the historic Spanish Ballroom. SWINGTOPIA is a five horn jazz octet specializing in the instrumental music of the swing era and consists of musicians who have performed with the Artie Shaw Orchestra, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, the Harry James Orchestra, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, the National Symphony, DC's premier service bands, and many of DC's favorite swing bands.  Most of Swingtopia's arrangements have a special DC connection, having been written by Sammy Nestico during his time with the military bands here in DC prior to his fifteen years composing and arranging for Count Basie.  The band will perform music by Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, Woody Herman, Duke Ellington, and more. With Katie McManus on vocals.

 

A beginner dance lesson runs from 8 - 9 pm with local favorites Dabe and Janelle Murphy (included in the cost of admission), followed by dancing from 9 pm - midnight. No partner or prior experience needed.

Tonight's band is Michael Gamble and The Rhythm Serenaders -- classic small-group swing at its finest! This six piece combo is a hard-swinging dedication to the style and arrangements of the mid-to-late 1940s, paying homage to the small groups of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Roy Eldridge, Illinois Jacquet, Chuck Berry, and other artists that mastered the small group sound. The Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture and the Washington Sculptors Group presents Sculpture REMIX: 2017 Craft/Technology/Art. This exhibition, juried by Allison Nance, brings together the diverse work of 20 artists from the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area in highlighting both the materials and the process. The dialogue of the show is aimed to re-establish the value and benefits associated with multi-tiered and cross discipline collaborations of artists, crafters and industrial designers. Building and constructing shared principles across these fixed boundaries has the ability to create poetic juxtapositions for cooperative projects.

During the weekend of April 8 & 9, artist Marc Robarge collaborated with Park visitors to develop textural rubbings for his piece "The Land..." included in the Sculpture REMIX 2017: Craft/Technology/Art exhibition in the Popcorn Gallery. 

Marc Robarge's piece will be a compilation of textural rubbings that will form an American flag. This community project is meant to engage people working together to construct an environmental and socially relevant image. Unity, collaboration, dialogue, creativity, connection to the earth and one another are themes woven into the process and materials involved in making this piece, which echo the themes of process and materials inherent in the entire show.  

The piece will be installed in the exhibition by Saturday, April 15.

The DC Lindy Exchange presents a swing dance with live music by The Jonathan Stout Orchestra in the historic Spanish Ballroom. The Jonathan Stout Orchestra is the nation’s premier swing dance big band. Like an upsized version of the Campus Five, the Orchestra showcases the big band sound of the late 1930s and early 1940s, and is the most danceable big band anywhere. The 15-piece Orchestra captures the unmatched excitement and true rhythmic pulse of the Swing-era. The band follows the templates of Benny Goodman and Count Basie – orchestras that are aggressive and tight, and filled with all-star soloists that bring the fire on every song, regardless of tempo.

Sue Wrbican will present her “Seligmann Center Project” in Sugar Loaf, NY, and discuss applications of traditional material formats such as sewing. Jade Garrett will present her experiences managing a digital MIX/ MakerSpace studio at GMU, and working with digital studios in the D.C. as well as Maryland areas. Alan Binstock will present his Public Installation Projects and applications of industrial formats in glass, resin and steel. The Panel will be held from 7 to 9pm moderated by Elsabe Dixon and will be followed by a Q & A session.

Waltz Time presents the 34th Annual Viennese Waltz Ball: "An Evening with Strauss." This benefit event is always a highlight of the spring season, giving dancers a chance to strut their stuff in elegant attire – while supporting Glen Echo Park! Live music is featured with a classical arrangement of Viennese waltzes of varying tempos, with a sprinkling of other couples dances, including polka, schottische and tango. Music provided by OLDE VIENNA with Alexander Mitchell (violin), Elke Baker (violin, viola), Jonathan Jensen (piano), Barbara Heitz (flute, piccolo), Ralph Gordon (bass).

 

An introductory Viennese Waltz lesson at 8 pm is followed by dancing until midnight in the Spanish Ballroom. A Grand March, dance cards, Carousel rides ($1.25/person) and refreshments complete a perfect evening. Formal attire suggested, no partner required. All dance tickets sold at the door beginning at 7:40 pm.

Discover the joy of glass at the 2017 Glass Arts Festival. Experienced glass artists from the National Capital Art Glass Guild will demonstrate glass techniques ranging from stained glass to fused glass to blown glass. Visitors will see how artists create jewelry, stained glass panels, blown vessels, recycled glass art, and fused glass sculpture.  Highlights include a special glass blowing demonstration at Glassworks studio and a murrini pull that produces long rods of patterned glass at the Art Glass Center.

 

Kids will create colorful faux glass pieces in a special children’s activity, while parents can peruse an array of glass gifts in our mini pop-up store in the Bumper Car Pavilion.
