Presented by the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, Tower in Three brings an installation by Washington, D.C. artist Barbara Liotta and curated by Laura Roulet to Glen Echo Park’s Stone Tower Gallery. The work is inspired by the architecture of the historic Stone Tower.

Liotta suspends dozens of shattered chunks of granite in three dimensions, creating an airborne inner tower, with its cylindrical shape echoed by a stone circle on the floor. The double suspended cylinder and ground circle become three forms of a tower.  In an Artist Statement, Liotta explains that she “…found the Glen Echo Park Stone Tower to be a uniquely challenging space....The piece is in three parts: the inner circle which reaches upward; the outer circle which plunges downward; and the separate bottom, the tower’s crashed echo across the floor. It is constructed from Brazilian granite, which compliments the stone of the building itself.”

Liotta lives and works in Washington D.C. In 2014, she was commissioned by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities to create nine monolithic sculptures for Legacy Memorial Park in Northeast Washington, honoring those killed in the 2009 Metro crash. She has also been commissioned to create works for several embassies throughout the world.

The Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture is pleased to present a solo exhibition of work by Walt Bartman. Inspired to face nature, Bartman is constantly searching for a sense of place. His work in Walt Bartman: Journey showcases his talent for capturing the light, color, and atmosphere in the landscape as he explores his journey as an artist.   Like Turner, to Bartman “The Sun is God!” and his search is for poetic spirituality. Growing up “out of the furnace” in North Braddock, Pennsylvania, a steel town near Pittsburgh that was then in its heyday, Bartman vividly remembers images of the mills at night and the energy of the rich colors emanating from the steel furnaces and reflected in the skies. It was captivating to see flames reaching toward the heavens. He has carried this imagery with him throughout his life, and it continues to inspire him. Bartman is known both nationally and internationally for his painting and teaching. He is the Founder and Director of the Yellow Barn Studio at Glen Echo Park in Glen Echo, Maryland. He has taught in the Washington D.C. area for more than forty years. Specializing in landscape and figure painting, he is known as one of Maryland's finest artist /teachers.

The Craig Gildner Big Band presents a swing dance with live music in the historic Spanish Ballroom!

New in 2017, the Craig Gildner Big Band presents a series of dances celebrating the Unsung Heroes of Swing. The band will shine a spotlight on bandleaders who were instrumental in the development of swing music, but were overshadowed by such luminaries as Goodman, Miller, and Ellington.

The Craig Gildner Big Band is a thirteen piece repertoire orchestra authentically recreating the sounds of the swing era made famous by Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Artie Shaw and others. Arrangements are direct transcriptions and stock selections that would have been played back in the day by bands across the country. Adding to the period feel, the rhythm section boasts calfskin drums arranged in a manner much like Krupa’s, gut wound bass strings, acoustic rhythm guitar on a vintage Gibson L7, and stride piano solos.

The musicianship is of the highest caliber. Bandleader Craig Gildner handpicked each and every section from DC’s pool of talented musicians. The band can whisper and scream… and everything in between…all in just one song!

The music will be soft and the lights will be up, so Mommies and Daddies can get their swing on in a family-friendly setting.

Children must be supervised by a guardian at all times. Adults do not have to be accompanied by a baby (but they must like babies!).

The Glen Echo Park Aquarium, in partnership with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is proud to offer youth the opportunity to become fascinated by sharks through Gills Club events.  Gills Club is a STEM-based education initiative dedicated to connecting girls with female scientists from around the world, sharing knowledge and inspiring shark and ocean conservation. The Gills Club encourages girls to take an interest in sharks and inspires them to become advocates for conservation.

Various interactive activities, experiments, a live shark and a talk led by the Aquarium’s own female shark researcher will help to expand your child’s knowledge about sharks.  The first Gills Club meeting will be held on Saturday March 18th from 10-11:30 am.  Participation is free, however, space is limited and preregistration is required. This program is for kids (girls and boys) ages 5-12.
